Cobh Ramblers slipped up in their pursuit of First Division leaders Dundalk tonight. Cobh could only draw 0-0 on their trip to face manager-less Athlone Town.
Second placed Ramblers started well and had the home side under pressure early on as John Kearney and Graham Cummins both brought good saves from goalkeeper Danny O'Leary.
However, Noel McGee might have snatched the lead for Athlone when he was denied from close range by a good block shortly before the break.
Cobh's chances of cutting Dundalk's lead back down to one point took a huge knock less than ten minutes into the second half when goalkeeper Stephen Deasy was sent off after fouling McGee outside the area.
Cobh already had goalkeeping problems and had no recognized keeper on their bench so Cummins was forced to take over between the posts.
Despite being a man down and using their top scorer in goal, Cobh still pushed for a winner and with a little bit more luck might have snatched it.
However, Athlone will be pleased to start life after Michael O'Connor with a respectable result against one of the promotion chasing sides.
