With Cobh Ramblers not playing until Wednesday night, Dundalk re-opened a three point lead at the top of the First Division of the League of Ireland following a comfortable 3-0 win over Athlone Town tonight.
Looking to bounce back from just their second league defeat of the season, Dundalk started well with Robbie Dunne firing them ahead in the sixth minute. Philip Hughes, so often the Dundalk goal-scorer - laid the ball off and Dunne lashed home from inside the box.
Athlone offered little in response and no end seems in sight for their woes. Dundalk went 2-0 up ten minutes before half-time when Robbie Doyle fired past Danny O'Leary with a superb long range free kick.
Doyle got his second of the night and third since returning to Irish football as he headed in from Paul Smyth's cross inside the opening minute of the second period to make it 3-0.
Another Dundalk goal looked likely although they were ultimately content with the three goal win.
